ABOUT THE BIRDS The national bird of the USA, the Bald Eagle has become scarce in many of its former strongholds, having suffered from persecution, pesticides, pollution and loss of habitat. Protection and reintroductions are helping its recovery.

The White-tailed Fish-eagle, Eurasian counterpart of the Bald Eagle, has also seen its population decline. Reintroductions are helping it in some areas, including Britain. Large numbers of magnificent Steller’s Fish-eagles still gather at their Japanese wintering grounds, providing one of the natural world’s most breathtaking spectacles.
