PLATE 48 in Handbook (Field Guide plate 52)

Collared Sparrowhawk Accipiter cirrhocephalus
Australia, New Guinea

Brown Goshawk Accipiter fasciatus
Australia, New Guinea, parts of Indonesia and Melanesia

Red Hawk Erythrotriorchis radiatus
N and E Australia

ABOUT THE BIRDS Although primarily a woodland species, the Collared Sparrowhawk also hunts over open country, often attacking finches, doves and small parrots at waterholes.
The Brown Goshawk is confusingly similar in plumage colour and markings to the smaller Collared Sparrowhawk. Its diet includes rabbits, pigeons, ducks and lizards.

The Red Hawk’s large size and massive feet make it a formidable predator. It takes cockatoos, kookaburras and many other birds, and sometimes kills flying-foxes. Formerly regarded as an accipiter, it is now placed in a distinct genus with Bϋrgers’s Hawk (plate 44).
